Introducing iDEIntity Intern, Melany Rebeiro
Hello! My name is Melany Rebeiro. I am from Webster, MA, and a rising junior at Bay Path Regional Vocational Technical High School. It is exhilarating to spend my summer interning for iDEIntity! I plan to have a career in STEM in the future. Furthermore, I am 16 years old and enjoy reading, baking, and learning about world history. I have worked on software and web development projects and continue to build on my abilities. I look forward to helping iDEIntity and advocating for DEI in smaller organizations. In a similar manner, I hope also to improve my skills during my time here!
What Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Mean to Me
Having grown up in a town with little diversity, diversity, equity, and inclusion are essential concepts to me. I felt eccentric because of my race and gender. I envision a workplace where everyone can feel valued and respected. Individuals from different backgrounds bring different perspectives and uniqueness to an organization, which can be a more comfortable space for individuals. Acknowledging these differences and learning from one another can remove layers of inequality. When embracing diversity, equity, and inclusion, I hope more organizations can form a workplace where individuals feel secure and included. I want to work for organizations in this inclusive environment someday. I believe a healthy, inclusive environment can thrive when everybody feels like they belong in an organization. Working in a community without these characteristics makes it difficult to feel comfortable. I would not want anyone to feel like they do not have a voice in their workplace. Taking a step further to bring these environments to life opens up many more opportunities in the workforce for individuals who do not have access to them.
Ensuring they have equal access to these resources and opportunities can level the playing field. In addition, creating these inclusive spaces will form strong connections between people. Moreover, many individuals and groups still do not understand DEI or maybe have never even heard of it. To build a better workforce, I hope this is something that can be naturally formed in adapting to the workforce when smaller organizations are built.
Joining iDEIntity and Looking Forward
iDEIntity was my first choice after being paired with the company through StandOut Connect. I am grateful to hear that working with iDEIntity has allowed me to help organizations and make an impact. I look forward to working on these projects and seeing how they will improve smaller organizations. I feel settled in after meeting my mentor and a few peers. Not only that, but it is also exciting to get to know everyone and become a part of this community. Exploring the different projects and their roles can allow me to explore my interests and make a meaningful impact simultaneously. During my interview, I talked about how improving communication is really important to me. By getting an insight into the work environment here, I will be able to gain an understanding of and develop skills in collaboration and teamwork. I am enthusiastic about this summer and feel very prepared.
As an intern, I want to get iDEIntity closer to its goals and learn more about smaller organizations. I aim to form great connections with my peers and gain an understanding of how to work on my project management. Of course, I also hope to gain much experience from this internship and make it worthwhile. I am anticipating gaining many achievements and personal growth. It is exciting to have real-world experience and pursue projects of my interest. By the end of this internship, I can’t wait to see the path my time with iDEIntity has laid out for me.
